White vs. Pink vs. Brown Noise: Which is Best?

By Yuumi | Published: October 25, 2025

In our Generator, you can add background noise to your binaural beats. The "Noise Type" dropdown gives you three options: White, Pink, and Brown.

But what's the difference? Not all static is the same. The "color" of noise refers to how its sound energy is distributed across different frequencies.

White Noise: The "Static"

White noise has equal energy at all frequencies. Because our ears are more sensitive to high frequencies, this sounds very "hissy" and "bright."

Pink Noise: The "Balanced Rain"

Pink noise has more energy at lower frequencies than white noise. It's designed to sound "equal" to the human ear, making it more balanced and less harsh.

Brown Noise (Brownian/Red Noise): The "Deep Rumble"

Brown noise has even *more* energy at lower frequencies than pink noise. It's deep, rumbly, and very low-pitched.

The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

For Focus / Studying: Start with Pink Noise. It's balanced and great at blocking office chatter or library sounds.

For Sleep: Start with Brown Noise. Its deep rumble is very soothing and masks the widest range of household and traffic sounds.

For Tinnitus / Sharp Noises: Try White Noise. Its high-frequency energy is best at masking that specific "ringing" sound.

Pro-Tip: Use the Filter!

Don't forget the "Noise Filter" panel! If you find Brown Noise *too* rumbly, or White Noise *too* hissy, you can adjust it.

Try adding Pink Noise, then set the 'Filter Type' to 'Lowpass' and 'Filter Frequency' to 2000 Hz. This "muffles" the noise, making it sound softer and even more relaxing. Experiment and find your perfect sound!
