"Binaural beats" is the most popular term for brainwave entrainment, but it's not the only method. The other major type is "isochronic tones."
Our Generator is a binaural beats generator. However, you can *simulate* an isochronic tone using the LFO! Let's compare them.
Binaural Beats: The "Phantom" Beat
As we've covered, this is a brain-only illusion.
- How it works: Two different frequencies (e.g., 200 Hz and 210 Hz) are sent to each ear separately.
- The brain creates: A "phantom" beat of 10 Hz.
- Headphones: REQUIRED. Won't work on speakers.
- How it feels: A smooth, subtle "wub-wub-wub" that feels like it's inside your head. It's gentle and mixes very well with music or noise.
Isochronic Tones: The "Rhythmic Pulse"
This method is much more direct. It's simply a single tone that is turned on and off very quickly in a precise rhythm.
- How it works: A single tone (e.g., 200 Hz) is pulsed on and off 10 times per second (a 10 Hz rhythm).
- The brain "hears": A very clear, rhythmic "thump-thump-thump" or "beep-beep-beep."
- Headphones: NOT required. Because it's a simple rhythm, it works perfectly on speakers.
- How it feels: Much more distinct and "intense" than a binaural beat. Some people find it more effective, while others find it annoying or distracting.
Which is "Better"?
Neither is universally "better"—it's a matter of preference and situation.
Binaural beats are generally considered more pleasant, relaxing, and easier to listen to for long periods. They are ideal for sleep, meditation, and background focus.
Isochronic tones are often considered more "potent" or "stimulating." Because the pulse is so clear, some users feel the brain "syncs" to it faster. They are popular for quick energy boosts or intense focus sessions.
How to "Fake" an Isochronic Tone in Our App
Want to try an isochronic-style beat? You can!
- Turn off one channel: This isn't perfect, but set your "Beat Frequency" to 0.1 Hz. This makes both tones almost identical.
- Go to "Modulation (LFO)":
- LFO: Enabled.
- Target: Tone Volume (Tremolo).
- Waveform: Square. (This is key! It makes the sound turn "on" and "off" instantly, not fade).
- LFO Frequency: 10 Hz (or your target "beat").
- LFO Depth: 100%.
You will now hear a single tone pulsing on and off 10 times per second. That's an isochronic tone! Try it and see which style you prefer.
